The Security Service (MI5) is responsible for protecting the United Kingdom against threats to national security. This is compared to MI6 whose role is protection with regard international security. Threats are from terrorism, espionage, sabotage and the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
You can join MI5 as an Intelligence Officer. You could be carrying out investigations, assessing threats to national security or analysing digital intelligence. Intelligence Officers also work in vital roles in legal, policy and corporate departments. Most Intelligence Officers move posts every two to three years to take on new challenges, gain different experience and expand their understanding of MI5’s work.
What does Intelligence Officer do?
Depending on your specific role, you could be:
- Liaising with translators,
- Investigating new leads,
- Running checks on irregular data and
- Seeking authorisation to proceed with surveillance coverage.
- Briefing agent runners or mobile surveillance officers, sharing information with a range of internal teams,
- Devising strategy to take investigations forward
- Bringing police special branches up to speed on activities taking place in their area.
