Many of the leading law firms offer some sort of short work placement in your first year, consisting of open days where you get exposure to the practice and what it does. You should look to secure at least one of these, either in the spring or summer. Generally they are open to law students in your 1st year and non-law students in your 2nd. Gaining early work experience will be advantageous when you finally apply for a summer placement in your penultimate year and a training contract.
