There are a number of schemes that are aimed at first year university students that are informative, interesting and will further your career prospects. Many of these require an application in the first term of university.
“In particular if you are interested in pursuing a career in banking, law or professional services,
most of the major employers offer Easter insight schemes for 1 or 2 weeks.
These are for first year undergraduates, or second year students undertaking a 4-year course.”
You will find them competitive and often involve a similar application process as that used to recruit graduates. (application form, online tests, interviews and assessment centre). This is because this is the first stage of their recruitment. If you are successful, and perform well in the week you spend with them, you can be fast tracked onto an assessment centre for their summer internship or work placement. This will put you ahead of the game early on and also take the pressure off you in your second year.
As well as actual schemes most leading employers will be visiting universities and you should explore what the programme is at your own campus. Many tend to be in the Sept-Dec period. As well as presentations, there are often dinners and games, which you have to sign up for. Places are limited so research the visits early. They are a great opportunity for networking, learning about the company and demonstrating your interest.
