Insights into Law

All of the leading law firms offer placements that vary between 1-4weeks in length at both Easter, summer and christmas. Most are 2 weeks. They are aimed at penultimate year law students or final year non-law students. These placements are used by many as the basis of their graduate recruitment the following year. You should therefore look to secure a number of these placements if possible.

Be aware that many law firms employ critical thinking tests as part of their recruitment process.

Law Solicitors: A - C

  • Addleshaw Goddard: Easter & Summer placments in all offices. The chance to sit along lawyers in 2 different departments. The placement also includes court trips, case studies and workshops. xx
  • Allen & Overy: 8 day winter programme and 3 week summer programme available. International placements available for 12 students to spend a week in one of 4 international offices. 60 positions available. 
  • Ashurst. A 2-week scheme over the Winter and two 2-week schemes over the summer. 
  • Baker & Mckenzie both London and International internships for both law and non law students
  • Berwin Leighton Paisner; 1 week schemes available in winter, Spring and three 2-week schemes running in summer.  
  • Bevan Brittan: 2 week placement in Birmingham, Bristol or London
  • Bircham Dyson Bell: 2 weeks across various departments. 
  • Bird & Bird: two 3-week placemnts available across June and July. You can choose to work in eithet Banking, Commercial, Corporate, Dispute Resolution, Real Estate, IP or Employment. 
  • BLM: 2 week vacation placment combined with a training contract in offices throughout the UK. 
  • Boodle Hatfield: 2 -week scheme in July. They take 8 students. 
  • Brethertons: 2 weeks in the summer. You will get involved in case studies, projects and shadowing. They have offices in Banbury, Bristol, London and Rugby. 
  • Bristows: 2 day workshops available Christmas, Easter and Summer (instead of vacation schemes)
  • Burges Salmon:(Bristol) 2 week placement where you visit 2 departments of your choice. 
  • Capsticks: The vacation scheme runs from end of June to mid August and placements last for 2 weeks each. Placements available in London, Birmingham and Leeds. 
  • Clifford Chance: they run a two week summer schemes on offer in London in Commercial Law. You are exposed to 2 different practice areas. Learn more about Clifford Chance assessment process and online tests HERE
  • Charles Russell Speechlys: three week summer placement programme, usually in London over June and July. Available in Guidlford and London. 
  • Clyde & Co: 2weeks at Easter & summer. They also offer the Bright Futures Progarmme which is 1 week aimed at penultimate non law students. 
  • CMS Cameron McKenna:(London, Bristol and Scotland spring and summer): 2-week paid scheme. 
  • Covington: London office on this US firm. Three week-long programmes run in June and July. 24 places in total. 


Law Solicitors: D - F

  • DAC Beachcroft: They offer vacation placments across various locations.  
  • Davis Polk. A 2 week vacation scheme offered in London by this US law firm. You will have the opportunity to work on international transactions for a variety of clients. 
  • Debevoise & Plimpton. US firm with a London office. They offer a 2 week summer vacation scheme. Apply in January. They specilaise in the main in corporate law. They also have a scheme for US students wanting to work in London. 
  • Dechert (Easter & summer): 1-2 weeks in length. You can spend time in corporate & securities, financial services, employment, finance and real estate, intellectual property or dispute resolution. 
  • Dentons: 1 week in London or Milton Keynes
  • DMH Stallard: 1 week unpaid. 
  • DLA Piper International: offer 3 weeks internship within 2 different practice areas.  
  • DWF. They have a number of offices including London, Dublin, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, where they run 2 week vacation schemes as well as open days. 
  • Eversheds Sutherland: 2 week paid placements in their offices. 
  • Faegre Baker Daniels: 1 week in the summer in the London office. 
  • Farrer & Co: They run 3 schemes, one at Easter and two in summer. Two weeks in length across 2 different practice areas. 
  • Fieldfisher: (Easter and summer): 10 people on each scheme invited to spend 2 weeks in the same department. 
  • Field Seymour Parkes (Reading): Generally 1 week in length. 
  • Fletchers: specialise in personal injury. offer 4-6 week vacation scheme. 
  • FootAnstey:(Plymouth, Exeter)
  • Forsters: 2 vacation scemes run in July. 
  • Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer: Three 3-week schemes in the summer. During your time, you will undertake a research project, plan and execute a group project and take part in a 1 day mock transaction.


Law Solicitors: G - L

  • Gibson Dunn. A global firm with a London practice.  The London office handles all aspects of corporate work including public and private M&A, private equity, finance, capital markets, tax & commercial real estate.  The office also has an extensive dispute resolution practice. They offer up to 20 individuals a three-week summer vacation placement, split across two practice areas (one transactional and one litigation).  In addition there is a programme of seminars and workshops.  The firm recruits most of its trainees from those on their summer vacation scheme. 
  • Government Legal Service (General Councils Office)> They do not always offer a vacation scheme every year. They do offer open days. 
  • Gowling WLG. The vacation schemes take place in London and Birmingham, lasting one week in the spring or two weeks in the summer.
  • Herbert Smith Freehills: available in the sping & winter and summer. Two schemes available  - one in London and the other with international placements. 
  • Hill Dickinson: Places available in Liverpool (12 places per scheme), Manchester (8 places per scheme) and Sheffield (4 places per scheme). 1 week in length. 
  • Hogan Lovells (two summer schemes and a winter scheme for final year non law students. Time will be spent across 3 different practice areas. 
  • Holman Fenwick Willan: 2 schemes each year, 2 weeks in length. 10 students on each. 
  • Ince & Co: Available Easter & summer. 2 weeks in length. London. 
  • Irwin Mitchell: summer work placement programme. 
  • Jones Day: non rotational scheme. 
  • K&L Gates. They offer a 2 week legal work placement in london. You will get broad exposure to opportunities in diverse areas such as white collar crime, sports law, M&A, finance, real estate and environment, amongst others. They also run a series of open days. The scheme is open to penultimate-year law students and final-year non-law students. They aim to give you a seat in at least two departments. 
  • Kennedys: 2 week scheme runs twice during June and July.
  • Kingsley Napley
  • King & Wood Mallesons. They run 3 vacation schemes - 1 in the spring and 2 in the summer - each are 2 weeks in length. You will spend time in 2 different fee earning depts. 
  • Kirkland & Ellis International: 2 week placement in the London office. 
  • Langleys: 3 days in York of Lincoln. 
  • Latham & Watkins (Easter & summer)
  • Leathes Prior (Norwich): Unpaid week long placements. 
  • Lewis Silkin:  3 day spring workshops. They also run vacation scheme weeks in the Cardiff office in June if you want the opportunity to experience what it is like to work with the Employment or Real Estate teams in Cardiff.
  • Linklaters: They offer a 4 week programme in the summer and 2 weeks in winter and spring. 


Law Solicitors: M - P

  • Macfarlanes (Easter & summer): 2 weeks covering 2 different practice areas. 
  • Mayer Brown (Easter & summer)
  • Michelmores (Exeter): Two 1-week schemes in the summer. 
  • Mills & Reeve (Birmingham, Norwich, Cambridge). 1 week placement. 
  • Morrison Foerster: 2 sessions of 2 weeks each with maximum 5 students at each at the London office. 
  • Norton Rose Fulbright: They offer a summer vacation scheme for penultimate year undergraduates from any degree discipline and a winter vacation scheme for finalists and graduates from any degree discipline.
  • Osbourne Clarke (Bristol, London, Reading): 2 weeks in the summer. 
  • Penningtons Manches 1 week in July
  • Pinsent Masons: 2 week in the summer across many offices. 
  • PWC Legal: 3 weeks in June nd july. 

Law Solicitors: R - S

  • Reed Smith The scheme runs twice in June and July with 20 places available per scheme. 
  • Rosenblatt: 1 week in June and July. You will gain exposure to most practice areas. 
  • Royds Withy King: Placements offered in Bath, Swindon and Oxford.
  • RPC: 2 weeks in 2 different departments. 
  • SAS Daniel: Their vacation scheme lasts a week in July and August - there are a number. They have offices in Stockport, Macclesfield, Congleton and Chester. 
  • Simmons & Simmons: 3 day winter workshop, 1 week spring internship for penultimate year non law students and a 2 week summer placement. 
  • Sidley Austin: They run 3 two-week summer vacation schemes out of their London office. You will spend time in at least two different departments and will share an office with a qualified lawyer. You will experience the day-to-day life of a lawyer and will have the opportunity to undertake real work rather than just observing or shadowing.You will receive £350 per week. 
  • Shulmans (Leeds): 2 weeks as the part of the selection for training contract
  • SGH Martineau (Birmingam): Mini vacation scheme of 2 days. 
  • Shearman & Sterling: 4 vacation schemes throughout the year for up to 2 weeks each. 40 places available
  • Slaughter & May: A one week scheme over Easter and three 2-week schemes over the summer. 
  • Slater & Gordon - work experience programme across 5 days
  • Shoosmiths: 35 placements of up to 2 weeks during June and July. 
  • Skadden (Easter & summer): 2 weeks in length. 
  • Speechly Bircham (Charles Russell):  2 weeks in Guildford or 3 weeks in London.  
  • Squire Patton Boggs (Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester & London): They offer a number of work experience internships. 
  • Stephenson Harwood (Easter, summer & winter): 1-2 weeks. 
  • Stevens & Bolton. They take 10 students for a 2 week period over the summer. They are based in Guildford. 
  • Sullivan & Cromwell: 2 week summer programme.

Law Solicitors: T - W

  • Taylor Vinters: They run a summer vacation scheme. Applications open in the autumn and successful applicants will get the opportunity to spend time in their Cambridge and London offices in two different teams.
  • Taylor Walton (Luton).2 weeks at the end of July. 
  • Taylor Wessing: Two week schemes. 40 places. 
  • Thomson Snell & Passmore (Tunbridge Wells and Thames Gateway): Esater and summer schemes. 
  • TLT: Easter and summer in London and Bristol. 
  • Travers Smith: 2 schemes during the summer and one at christmas. 2weeks in 2 different departments. 
  • Trowers & Hamlins (London, Exeter, Manchester): 25 places summer places across the 3 offices. 
  • Veale Wasbrough Vizards (Bristol, London): work across many different practice areas. 
  • Walker Morris (leeds): 48 one week placements in June and July. 
  • Watson Farley & Williams (Easter & Summer): 2 week placements at the London office. 
  • Weightmans (Liverpool +)
  • Weil: 2 week scheme in the summer with 30 students. 
  • White & Case: 2-week mplacements during Easter and summer.
  • Winckworth Sherwood: 8 students invited each summer for 2-week structured programme in London. 
  • Withers: Three 2-week work placements in the London office. 
  • Womble Bond Dickinson: open days available in Bristol, Plymouth and Southampton offices.
